01

Provenance

Cloves originated in Indonesia’s Maluku Islands and became a defining Zanzibar crop under nineteenth-century Omani rule. Other spices followed through older and continuing Indian Ocean networks.

Origin must include how crops arrived, who cultivated them and how power shaped the landscape—not only their fragrance.

02

Why it matters

Zanzibar’s clove wealth was built substantially through enslaved labour. Responsible provenance does not romanticise that history; it makes room for truth while recognising the living knowledge of growers today.

Provenance note

This profile describes the wider origin and crop. It does not represent certification or a named supplier relationship.
